September 2011
Two September events, a seminar at the Riverside County Office of Education and a webinar hosted by SchoolsMovingUp, highlighted the Collaborative’s work around 8th grade algebra. In both events, Collaborative staff drew on the Collaborative’s brief on ensuring student access and success in higher level mathematics to share lessons and perspectives from California districts. Matt Rosin and Mary Perry from EdSource also presented recent findings from an analysis of 7th and 8th grade math and Algebra I CST scores of 70,000 California students. Deputy State Superintendent Deb Sigman concluded by exploring implications for and ongoing developments with the state in light of the recent adoption of the Common Core State Standards.
